Thornton Francis Diamond

                                                                                                                                                                                                        MSPCA  aka "the rock"

I'd like to introduce you to Thornton Francis "Diamond". He is a remarkable guy, with quite a sad history. We went to the MSPCA to look for a dog after our boy Earl passed away in Sept.

His name was originally Thor, you know, the Norse god of thunder? That just didn't fit. He was more like the god of Blunder, so we changed his name to Thornton. That just fit him better.

Thornton was out in the "yard" on the "rock", pumping iron when he found us. Dr. Atkins and the folks at the MSPCA were awesome people. They told us about Thornton. His previous owners had left him in a kennel for six years. He had never seen the inside of a house, never had a ride in a car, he basically knew nothing!

He was not housebroken, he didn't know his name, I don't even know if he knew English. The poor guy

had Lyme disease ,and heartworm. We paid for the medicine for his Lyme disease, and the  MSPCA

paid for the heartworm treatment (which is a $600/$700 treatment).  We took him anyway. He had his first treatment in Dec. Then he was to keep calm for 6-8 weeks. Fortunately, he came calm, so it was easy. Within 2 weeks, he was housebroken, we could take him out without a leash, and he became part of the family.

Then, while we were away on vacation. we got a call saying Thornton needed emergency surgery for GDV, or the bloat. In case you don't already know, GDV is when a dog's stomach flips, and is really bad.

So $5000.00 later, we brought him home again. His second round of heartworm treatments needed to be delayed for a bit so he could heal. When it was time to start his second round of treatments, there was no way I was going to leave him again. I sat with him in a 10'x10' room for 2 days. Have you ever seen how a dog is when they have arsenic injected into their backs? It's such a sad sight. It's like watching someone coming off alcohol, shaking, crying, it was awful to watch, but I think he was glad I was there, and so was I. Then, he came home again for another 6-8 weeks of being calm. You cannot let their heart rate get too high.

Now, he's healthy, he's soooo happy, and loves his new home. And smart? This guy was just aching to learn new things. He wipes his feet before coming into the house, he sits pretty, says please, and let's know when he needs to go outside. We are just so proud of how far this little guy has come. He loves to go for rides in the car. He gets his picture taken when he has his "Doggles" on more than most Hollywood stars, and he is just

hysterical. We plan on keeping him healthy and happy for a very long time.

UPDATE: We had Thornton re-tested for heartworm on May 27,2009 and he is now HEARTWORM FREE!!!!!!! Go Thornton!

Another update, Thornton has passed his Canine Good Citizen test!
